The Vikings were several nordic tribes of sorts that mostly minded their own business for a long time. Until around the mid to late 800s C.E., they stayed in Norway. However, as English fishermen began overfishing certain fish with migratory patterns, the Vikings main food supply (those same fish) began to run out. As a result they moved away from peaceful fishing and began raiding England and France, and also exploring west. They discovered Iceland, Greenland, and Vinland, which was actually North America. That the movie depictions are wrong. The last name was based on the father's name... Ander's son, Erik's son. Women were not warriors. Women were not treated poorly. Women were not taken on the boats when the men went to new land. Vikings were explorers who may or may not have been violent (ok so violence it was...). My ancestors came from Sweden. They used to believe in Oden.Norse people from Norway, Sweden and Holland were all know as Vikings. They called themselves Danes. They resolved conflicts with a twelve man jury system. They had many gods and godesses. Best open sea navigators until the Age Of Discovery 1200 Ad. Their ships flexed and could withstand far more than any other of the times with a shallow draft. Second and subsiquent sons would not get any inheridence from their father so they would travel and move to new lands to farm.They sailed boats, wore horns on their helmets, worshiped the Norse gods in Vahalla & came to Greenland about 900AD.#If you have any other info about this subject , Please add it free.# |
